Boost Your Job or Internship Search With These 3 Tips

There is no doubt that this a tough environment for finding jobs and internships. While some industries have been deeply affected, others are surviving and have been able to pivot during this time. Improvements in technology has enabled remote work for many companies and their employees. No matter where you are, know that there is light at the end of the tunnel and we will get through this together. In the meantime, there are 3 important steps you can take right now to improve your chances of finding a job or internship in this environment: 1) Network

This is the best thing you can to land a job. The majority of hires come from referrals. Knowing someone is not a requirement to get hired and it certainly does not make you qualified for a job, but when someone can speak to your reputation and work ethic it can help increase your chances.

Now is a great time to network virtually, most people are more available to talk (at least for those fortunate enough to be working at home). See our post on top 5 tips for networking on Instagram (@career.wiseup).

2) Be Open

Times like these might make it difficult to go into the exact position you're looking for. Focus on opportunities and industries you haven’t previously considered. An internship or job in something else is better than nothing and keep in mind that there are many paths to achieving your ultimate long-term goal. 3) Grow your Skills

Learn a new skill, earn a certification, write for a blog, start freelancing - do something that will grow your skills and experience. Don’t forget to add new skills to your resume and LinkedIn profile.

Some other things you can do to set yourself a part:

  • Cold calling- Don't wait until the summer; call a local business and ask if they need help now (it doesn’t matter that they don’t have a specific posting for an internship). Consider what skills you have to offer them and ask to work part-time or even unpaid.

  • Freelance- This can consist of many different things; design, CS, or writing for a website you're interested in. Doing this not only adds experience to your resume, but it'll also help you learn more about industries you're passionate about. To learn more about freelance websites, click here.
